Student pet owners may face housing challenges in Boone |

Appalachian State University students who want to have pets in off-campus housing facilities may face challenges.
Few rental services in Boone allow pets.
Holton Mountain Rentals, Birch Tree Apartments and The Village of Meadowview are among the few
apartment complexes that do allow pets.
Holton Mountain Rentals’ pet policy varies from location to location.
However, all pets require a $500 deposit per pet, and dogs over 45 pounds are not allowed.
Birch Tree Apartments’ policy allows for cats with a $100 non-refundable deposit.
The Village of Meadowview allows a maximum of two pets per apartment.
Also, pets cannot weigh over 40 pounds.
However, pets that are required for a disability are permissible at any location.
According to the Fair Housing Act, landlords are required to provide reasonable accommodations for
those with disabilities, including allowing service animals.
Students who wish to adopt pets from the Watauga Humane Society must go through a screening
process said, Anita Gomez, assistant manager of the shelter.
To qualify, students must live where pets are allowed.
The shelter calls the landlord or rental service to get the pet approved, she said.
For adoption of pit bulls, the shelter will conduct a home visit to make sure the pet will have a suitable
place to live.
They also conduct follow-up visits if needed.
If potential adopters have other pets, they must have them spade or neutered, Gomez said.
Deciding what pet is right for you all depends on what you are looking for, she said.
“You could be looking for a short-haired dog, a long-haired dog, an already-trained dog, a puppy,” she
said. “It all just depends.”
