August 26, 1999| Sisters donate time for worthy philanthropies
Jackie Lueke Staff Writer
Members of these two sororities man the tables at the book rental station to students in exchange for minimum wage. The bookstore then writes one check to each sorority for the total amount
of hours worked. The sorority then donates the money to charities.
This money is then sent to the Children’s Miracle Network. The Children’s Miracle Network treats children up to 18 years of age with medical problems. The money Phi Mu raises goes toward the neonatal equipment used for premature babies and other equipment needed for the children. Every year the sisters of Phi Mu travel to the Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte and tour the children’s ward and the neonatal unit to see the benefits from their donations. Delta Zeta sorority raises around $4000-$6000 per year in donations for two philanthropies. They support the hearing impaired and helps the Speech and Hearing Comprehensive Clinic here on campus. The clinic provides services to Appalachian students and others in Boone with hearing defiencies. The other receipient is Gallaudet University located in Washington D.C. Students that attend the university are hearing and speech impaired and receive financial aid from Delta Zeta.
