August 26, 1999| SGA has big plans for student body
Stephanie Varas SGA Beat Editor The Student Government Association has big plans for the upcoming school year. Student body president Sam Searcy and vice-president Kiley Costner are working toward goals that will better the university and unify the student body. “Committed to Service” is the slogan they ran under last spring, and
they mean just that. They will continue striving to keep SGA student-friendly,
explained Costner. “What most students do not know is that they are
all a part of the Student Government Association,” added
The student government is a representative council of all students at ASU, and they address the concerns and well-being of the student body and university as a whole. The upcoming senate election is one of the main focuses for Searcy and Costner. Costner, who is in charge of the senate, wants to have a more diverse senate so that ASU students are better represented. At least one senator will be present at every CRSA meeting to keep close contact with students. Students who have issues to present before the council are invited to attend weekly meetings held on Tuesday nights. SGA also provides a website which is updated regularly. There is a “reply” section on the site so that people can feel free to give input and opinions. Searcy and Costner want students to know that SGA is here for them. SGA consists of cabinet members who are required to serve fifteen hours a week, and senators serve at least one hour a week. “The door is always open for students to come in and tell us their opinions,” said Costner. Searcy and Costner, teamed with the rest of SGA, are working to plan several events that will take place during the 1999-2000 school year. The first big event is Homecoming in October. SGA is in charge of the Homecoming king and queen and organizing the parade. Walk for Awareness and a hunger banquet are also upcoming events, but these are just a few of the many things that SGA has on the agenda for this year. |
