Fund-raising opportunity for organizations
Student organizations interested in fund-raising opportunities: Sell Ecuadoran goods (sweaters, etc.) at a table in the Student Union. Good chance to make money for your club or for a charity. Co-op orientation sessions scheduled
Cooperative Education is a planned learning process that integrates academic study with work experience in a field related to your academic major.  You can put classroom theories into practice by spending two or more academic terms doing paid work in a professional, career-related position.
Cooperative Education opportunities are available during the spring, summer and fall  terms.  Students who want to participate in Co-op are required to attend an orientation session.  Join us at an orientation session on:

Computer-Based Testing Center
Need to take the GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, and/or PRAXIS-I this spring?  Test at your convenience at Appalachian’s Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Center.  If you would like to schedule a time to test, please call the CBT Center  at 262-6801.  Advantages include flexible scheduling and immediate scoring with official scores in 2-3 weeks. Testing hours this spring semester are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m..  Friday hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.   Saturday hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Financial Aid Information Fair Jan. 27
The Office of Financial Aid will sponsor its 2nd annual Financial Aid Information Fair on Thursday, Jan. 27, in the Plemmons Student Union from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

The fair will provide information regarding applying for financial aid for summer 2000, fall 2000 and spring 2001. Special procedures for study abroad will also be available. Representatives from many of the financial institutions that service student loans will be available to discuss their services with students.

Orientation leaders for Phase 1 sought
The Office of General Studies will seek applications for Student Orientation Leaders through Feb. 4.  This is a paid position, $1,200.00, room and some meals provided.  Employment dates are: June 25 - July 29;  Aug. 13-14;  Jan. 3-4, 2001.  If you are interested in this leadership position, pick up an application between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. in 154 Rankin Hall or go on-line to www.appstate.edu/www_docs/gstudies for a printable application. An information session for these positions will also be held on Monday,  Jan.  24, at 5:30 p.m., in MacRae Peak Room, Plemmons Student Union.

Service award nominations sought
The Alumni Affairs Office is seeking nominations for the Outstanding Service Awards, which recognize individuals for their exceptional service to the  university.  Examples of outstanding service are:  serving on any board or council dedicated to the progress of Appalachian State University, assisting with alumni functions or related university events, promoting Appalachian in the community through teaching or fund raising, providing financial support, and contributing time or energy to the betterment and development of Appalachian.  Candidates may not be current Appalachian employees or on the alumni council.  The awards will be presented at the Spring Fling Awards Banquet on April 28, 2000.  The nomination deadline is Jan. 27.  Please call the Alumni Affairs Office at 2038 for a nomination form.

Fluency Support Group set for Feb. start
The Communication Disorders Clinic at Appalachian State University is pleased to announce the formation of a Fluency Support Group.  This group is for those who experience a communication disorder called “stuttering”. The group is open to anyone, regardless of age, who stutters.  The purpose of the group is to provide anyone who is experiencing a fluency disorder with intervention, support, and a chance to interact with and meet those who have similar concerns.  There is no charge for participation in the group.  The group will meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month, beginning in February.  Meetings will be in room 123 in Edwin Duncan Hall on the ASU campus.  Meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m. and last approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours.   If you would like additional information about this group or would like to sign up to attend, please contact Cathy Davis at (828)262-3092 or e-mail at daviscn@appstate.edu.

Counseling Center programs available
These Counseling and Psychological Services Center groups are designed to provide growthful experiences for both students who want to resolve specific concerns and those who generally want to enhance the quality of their interactions with others and feel better about themselves. To arrange to participate in a group or for more information, contact the Counseling and Psychological Services Center at 262-3180. Groups are:

Understanding Self and Others (3 group times: Tuesday, 3:30 ? 5:00; Wednesday, 4:00 ? 5:30; Thursday, 3:30 ? 5:00): Members explore patterns of relating to self and others with the aim of developing greater understanding and acceptance of themselves and others.  Presenting issues vary widely from depression, anxiety, difficulties relating to/accepting self or others, issues of family conflict or abuse, etc.  Students who want to resolve specific concerns as well as those seeking personal growth are welcome.

Understanding Self and Others ? For Women (Monday, 3:30 ? 5:00): Same as the above, for those who want the support of an all female group.

Act-ing on Body Images (Tuesday, 3:30 ? 5:00): A group for students with concerns about their body image and negative feelings about self.

Chronic Illness Group (Monday, 3:30 ? 5:00): Do you have an ongoing medical condition?  How about someone about whom you care deeply?  Would it be helpful to discuss your thoughts and feelings with others?  If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, you may benefit from these meetings.  The Counseling Center and Wellness Center are combining talents to co-lead this group in the student Wellness Center.  The co-leaders would like to meet with you before the start of the group to ask and answer questions.  Please call 262-3180 for an appointment.

Rape Support Group (Wednesday, 5:00 ? 6:30, Yadkin River Room): This group is designed to offer support for those women who have experienced sexual trauma in dating relationships or with strangers.  The group will meet Wednesdays from 5-6:30* starting January 19th in the Yadkin River Room of the Student Union.  (*Note: There will be no meeting 2/2, 3/8, or 3/15.)  Contact Susan Jones at the Counseling Center (262-3180) for more information

Dream On (Tuesday, 5:30 ? 7:30): This group is designed to help understanding yourself better and solve personal problems by exploring your own and others’ dreams.  Your dreams can offer fascinating reflections on your past, your waking life, and your personality.  Tap into their potential as a valuable resource for self-growth and making positive changes in your life.

Therapeutic Weekend for Self Enhancement (Friday, March 24th, 5:30pm ? Sunday, March 26th, 5:00pm): This group will be a 21 hour intensive therapeutic experience for those who are committed to self-exploration to enhance knowledge, understanding and acceptance of self, improve styles of relating to self and others, and overcome problems or blocks that limit personal potential.

Cultural Identity Encounter Group (Tuesdays, 3:30 - 5): This group is designed to help members develop a greater understanding of themselves and others. Particularly, members will explore their own cultural identity and how their conceptualization of “culture” and “race” affects their interaction with others. People of ALL cultural backgrounds are welcome.

Family, Addictions and You (Thursday, 4 ? 5:15): Support for students affected by a family member or partner’s alcohol or drug addiction.  This will be an open discussion group addressing such topics as family enabling, survival roles, self-care, substance abuse, etc.  Meetings will be held in the Wellness Center—call 262-3148 to register and set up an initial interview with the group leader, Dale Kirkley.

Spring Diversity Series to kickoff Jan. 25
The Appalachian State Univesity Diversity Series will begin Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 5 p.m. in the Multicultural Center in Plemmons Student Union. The first program, “Myths and Stereotypes of Differently Abled Individuals,” will expose audience members to learning, physical and mental disabilities that members of our community have. It is a goal that attendees will leave this session with a better understanding of the challenges that differently abled individuals face and things each of us can do to address myths and stereotypes that are held about differently abled people.

Other Diversity Series programs are:

“Let My People Go: The Trials of Bondage in Words of Master and Slave,” an original theatre piece based on petitions to southern county courst and state legislatures during the time of slavery. The piece is a production of theTouring Theatre Ensemble of North Carolina. The program will be in the Linville Falls Room of Plemmons Student Union, Feb. 3, 7 p.m.

“Examining Myths and Stereotypes,” Tuesday, Feb. 29, 5 p.m., in the Multicultural Center of Plemmons Student Union.

Turtle Vision, Inc. Native American history, storytelling, drumming, flute playing and dancing. Time, date and location to be announced.

Assessment Day schedule set
The Spring Assessment "Focus" Day will be held Thursday, Jan. 20. All classes for undergraduate students are canceled until 5:00 p.m. that day.  Undergraduate classes that start at 5:00 p.m. or later that day will meet as scheduled. Graduate level classes are held as scheduled all day.
