| Revenge was the word in Statesboro, Tuesday, as the the Appalachian
State men’s soccer team defeated Georgia Southern, 1-0, in double overtime
to move on to the second round of the Southern Conference tournament.
The win was pay-back for Appalachian after losing their final regular season game at Kidd-Brewer Stadium to the Eagles, 3-1. Jordy Broder scored the game’s only goal at the 115:10 mark to give fifth seeded Appalachian State a 1-0 double overtime win over number four seed, Georgia Southern, at Eagle Field. With the win, Appalachian will move on to play in the tournament’s semifinal round at Davidson, this Saturday, at 11:30 a.m., versus the winner of the Wofford/Furman quarterfinal match. The Mountaineers improve to 13-7-0 on the season and 5-4-0 in league
play. Georgia Southern finishes its season with a 6-11-1 overall mark and
a 4-4-1 Southern Conference record. Broder netted his game-winning goal in the second overtime period, off a deflected save from GSU keeper John Miglarese, with just under five minutes remaining. After several sporadic counter attacks, the ASU defense kept Georgia Southern scoreless to preserve their lead and take the win. Broder finished with a game-high five shots on goal, despite GSU outshooting Appalachian State 23-11. For the Eagles, David Fisk had a team-high four shots, while Jeremy McClure, Marc Gaskins and Mike O’ Neal added three shots each. Defensively, ASU goalkeeper Robert Black recorded his first career shutout with his nine-save effort. GSU’s Miglarese collected three saves in the losing cause. Appalachian State’s match-up against the winner of the Wofford/Furman game will kick off Southern Conference semifinal action on Saturday. The second semifinal match is slated for 2 p.m. The championship game will begin at 2 p.m., Sunday afternoon. |
