The Ninth Annual Walk for Awareness will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 1998. The event will begin at 9:00 p.m. at the steps of Sanford Hall. The Walk was established following the death of Jeni Gray, a staff writer for the university, who was abducted during a walk through campus and downtown Boone and murdered September 24, 1989.

Participants will walk through campus to King Street to the lawn of the Jones House Community Center.

Appalachian Focus Days

Appalachian’s first Focus Day will be held Tuesday, September 15, 1998. All new freshmen at Appalachian will be tested for approximately three hours. The testing will begin at 1:30 p.m. and should be finished at 4:30 p.m. Students will be tested on Reading or Math/Science reasoning. All will complete a pre-college inventory or student experiences and expectations. New freshmen will receive in their ASU Box the week before Focus Day an “Admit Ticket” for testing, indicating where to report on campus and which assessment test they will complete.

Questions about this assessment program should be directed to Dr. Randy Swing, Acting Director of Assessment, at the Assessment Office 262-4090 or swingrl@appstate.edu

A Novel Experience

Dinner tables decorated with cats, hats, flags and souvenirs from other countries are all part of “A Novel Experience,” a dinner and auction September 11 benefiting Belk Library.

The ballroom at the University’s Broyhill Inn and Conference Center will become a booklover’s paradise as university library advisory board members and other volunteers decorate the tables illustrating such favorites as “The Cat in the Hat,” “Grapes of Wrath,” “Great Expectations” and “Around the World in 80 days.” Prizes will be awarded for the most creative and most attractive tables.

A silent auction will feature a variety of items, including golf packages, gift certificates, books and home furnishings.

The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception, followed by dinner at 7:15 p.m. Cost of the evening is $50 per person. The deadline for reservations is September 4.

If interested in decorating a table, call Bettie Bond at 264-4275. For more information on the auction or to make a reservation, call Patty Wheeler at 262-4973.
