Gamma Beta Phi National Convention

Fifteen members of Appalachian State’s Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society attended the national convention in Nashville, Tenn.

The chapter received the prestigious Distinguished Chapter Award for its excellence in community service.

ASU Chapter President Scarlet Wootton presented a workshop titled “How to be an Effective Leader,” and Dr. Don Saunders was recognized for his outstanding performance as the new chapter advisor.
 

Visiting Writers Series

Filipino-American Nick Carbo will explain how colonialism can create a sense of borrowed language when he discusses his latest work as a part of the Visiting Writers Series.

The poet will speak in the Calloway Peak Room of the Plemmons Student Union on Monday, April 6, at 7 p.m.

Books will be available for purchase and signing.

North Carolina Student Legislature

Members from the Appalachian Delegation to the North Carolina Student Legislature (NCSL) attended the annual Session in Raleigh, March 18-21.

This session marked the 61st Year of the Student Legislature.  NCSL is a model general assembly of college studetns.  Student written legislation is debated at monthly Interim Council meetings.

Over 40 percent of NCSL’s legislative ideas have been passed into law.  The highlight of the session was a visit from N.C.’s 16th District Sen. Howard Lee.

Students are encouraged to join the delegation to UNC-Charlotte for the April Interim Council, April 18-19.

Pershing Rifle Team

The Appalachian ROTC is hosting a Junior ROTC drill meet competition for 13 area high schools.  The schools will compete in Regulation and Exhibition Drills.

The meet is on Saturday, April 4, at 8 a.m. in Broome-Kirk Gym.

The public is invited, and no admission will be charged.

Affirmative Action Panel

Join students, faculty and staff leaders in a discussion about the future of affirmative action on and off campus.

The panel discussion will be held tonight at 7 p.m. in I.G. Greer Auditorium.
