Many amenities Appalachian State University students take for granted did not exist prior to Dr. John E. Thomas’ reign as chancellor.

Thanks to Thomas, current students can enjoy a number of conveniences.

“The campus is, right now, as beautiful as I’ve ever seen it,” Thomas said, who is in his 31st year at Appalachian. “It’s a great time for young people to be here in school.”

A look at ASU's history: Francis T. Borkowski

After his own 10-year run as chancellor, Dr. Francis T. Borkowski will be present to see the next generation of leadership at Appalachian State University come to power during Installation.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for Chancellor (Kenneth E.) Peacock,” Borkowski said. “It needs to be a celebratory event.”

Installation will be a special experience because Appalachian does not see rapid turnover in chancellors, Borkowski said.

W. Brad Norman, a rising senior journalism major from Charlotte, has been named the 71st Editor-in-Chief of The Appalachian by Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Development Cindy A. Wallace.

SGA extends cabinet deadline

About 20 people have applied for positions on the 2005-06 Student Government Association cabinet, SGA President-elect P. Jud Watkins said.

The deadline for submitting applications was extended to yesterday to allow more qualified students to apply. Twelve positions are available.

Installation events continue through Friday

A weeklong series of events kicked off Saturday to celebrate the history of Appalachian State University and its newest chancellor, Kenneth E. Peacock.

While Peacock's official installation won't happen until Friday morning, the university has events planned throughout the week for the university community and Town of Boone.

Preacher Gary Birdsong, who is known for being controversial, shared his message with Appalachian State University students on Duck Pond Field Tuesday afternoon.

"I try to preach on things that are happening to the university, to try and get people's attention and get involved in conversations and stuff like that," he said.

Marine discusses Iraq in weekend forum

U.S. Marine Charlie Anderson, son to English professor Dr. Lynn A. Searfoss, served with the U.S. military for nine years. This weekend, he will speak at Appalachian State University about his perception of the war in Iraq and his involvement with Iraq Veterans Against the War.
