Track, field dominate Neely Invitational The Appalachian State University track & field team headed off the mountain Saturday to compete in the Neely Invitational, hosted by North Carolina A&T, in Rock Hill, S.C. The team not only competed, but they dominated the rest of the field. “We have been getting faster all season,” head coach John Weaver said. “Our technique is also getting even better as the year goes on.” Teammates Rhonda White and Jennifer Claud jumped their way into the East Regional with qualifying marks in the triple jump. White also won the 100-meter hurdles with an NCAA qualifying time of 13.83 seconds before she won the triple jump. Claud was just behind White in the triple jump, with Paula Moore finishing in third place. Beverly Burnett sent the shot put a distance of 14.89 meters, matching her Southern Conference leading mark. Nikole Simmons finished in second place, throwing the shot put a distance of 14.84 meters. In the discuss event, Emily Styers finished third with Burnett behind her in fourth. Caroline Kitchens threw the javelin 36.40 meters to take the event. The Mountaineers swept the top three places in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Cailin Lynch, Christina Post and Kristen Trexler, respectively. Bryan Burney and Matt Gould finished second and third in the 800-meter run on the men’s side. In the men’s shot put, Dan Utley ended up with second place after throwing a distance of 14.38 meters. Wes Kiser and Utley finished in first and second respectively in the discuss event. The Campbell University Camels could not touch Appalachian State’s Jennifer Hurley Monday afternoon. Hurley threw a no-hitter in the first game of the double-header to lead the Mountaineers to a 2-0 win. Hurley managed to strike out 13 batters in her nine innings of pitching to improve her season record to 4-13. In the win, Appalachian’s Lindsay Glover went 3-for-4 and hit the game winning RBI. With her performance, Glover increased her multi-hit streak to seven games. Also contributing in the victory was Diana Cook, who scored the winning run. The second game of the double-header was not as successful for the Mountaineers. CU’s Lauren Caviness returned the favor by throwing a no-hitter of her own to give the Camels a 1-0 victory. In the loss, Appalachian pitcher Keri Blackwelder struck out nine batters, but still picked up the loss. Her record fell to 8-7 record on the season. The Mountaineers will return home to host North Carolina A&T this afternoon at 3:30. It came down to the end of the match, but the Appalachian State men’s tennis team could not gain the victory. The Mountaineers lost a close match against Georgia Southern University Sunday afternoon, 4-3. The match teetered on Dimitar Dimotrov’s singles match. Dimotrov fought back from a 5-1 deficit. but was unable to win in the tiebreaker set. Alex Probst and Andrew Taylor also picked up single match victories for Appalachian. With the loss, ASU fell to 7-12 overall with a 3-5 record in the Southern Conference. Appalachian’s next match is a make-up match verse Elon University tomorrow afternoon. It was a rough Sunday afternoon for the Appalachian State women’s tennis team. The Mountaineers fell to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 49ers, 7-0. Charlotte’s Laura Swain picked up victories in singles and doubles matches, s did Jennifer Hatcher. With the loss, the Mountaineers fell to an overall record of 6-11 as well as a 1-6 record in the Southern Conference. Appalachian will return to action this afternoon as they travel to face the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
