Wilmington murders prompt UNC safety task force

Safety has always been a primary issue for college campuses. Students must feel protected and comfortable in their learning environment in order to succeed.
Over the last six months, the University of North Carolina system has focused on each university’s responsibility to protect their students.

ASU visitor arrested on drug charges

A visitor to Appalachian State University was arrested on drug charges two weeks ago.
Robert Gibson, an 18-year-old resident of Winston-Salem, N.C., was taken into custody by University Police Jan. 10 after the department received warrants for his arrest from the Stokes County Sheriff’s Department, Lt. James P. Minton said.

Boone man arrested on child solicitation

A Town of Boone resident was arrested and charged with solicitation of child by computer to commit an unlawful sex act, according to a Boone Police Department press release.

Professor publishes book on lives of older lesbians

Appalachian State University professor Cheryl Claassen recently completed and published her seventh book, titled “Whistling Women: A Study of the Lives of Older Lesbians.”
Claassen, who has been teaching at Appalachian State University for 22 years, also spent time teaching at the University of Connecticut, the University of Cincinnati and Harvard University.

Former supremacist to discuss racism

A former member of the white supremacist group Aryan Nation will share his experiences and views on racism with Appalachian State University.
The Office of Multicultural Student Development is sponsoring “Inside the Mind of Racism” and asked Floyd Cochran to speak at the event.
