The new Library & Information Commons takes shape.

Library project works overtime to complete
Library & Information Commons looks to May 2005 completion

Progress continues to be made on the Library & Information Commons at Appalachian State University, which will house more space, features and services than Belk Library.

“We’re 45 percent through with the entire project,” Project Manager Patrick A. Beville said Aug. 5. “That includes the parking garage [to be built next to the library & information commons]. That’s weighted, because the library’s so much bigger than the parking garage in terms of monetary values.”

The roof was 50 percent done and the masonry was 75 percent done, Beville said.

“We’re probably 90 percent finished with the electrical conduit installation on the inside, [and] 75 percent finished with the mechanical installation, which is all the duct work and the DOD boxes, and things of that nature,” he said.

Wallace takes Vice Chancellor reins
Vice Chancellor for Enrollment to serve as interim Student Development leader

Cindy Wallace has taken over the position of interim vice chancellor for student development, Appalachian State University Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock announced Friday in a news release.

“Ken Peacock talked with me about this being a possibility. It wasn’t something I had really considered before,” Wallace said.

2008 class near record-setting numbers

A near record-setting number of freshmen are expected to begin moving into campus today, Appalachian State University Officials said.

Approximately 2,550 freshmen are expected to enroll for the fall semester, beginning Aug. 24.

Rhododendron returns after 12 years

At long last, Appalachian State University has an annual once again. Twelve years passed since the production and release of the university's last annual, but this is the magic year.

Taylor Publishing is currently printing "The Rhododendron" in Dallas, Texas. It will be released and shipped directly to buyers in September.

Barrax named Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing

The department of English’s Rachel Rivers-Coffey Professorship in Creative Writing is back this semester for its second year.

Gerald Barrax will be this year’s Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing. Barrax has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award for his work.
