Catamounts take Old Mountain Jug

Appalachian State has become accustomed to games won or lost in the final minutes this season.

After taking a 27-16 lead with 5:00 left to play, Appalachian trailed Western Carolina 30-27 with 4.1 seconds left to go.

With no timeouts left, ASU sent kicker Julian Rauch out to attempt a 54-yard field goal.

As the field goal fell just short, the hard reality began to set in for the Mountaineers.

Not only did Western beat Appalachian for only the second time in 20 years, but Appalachian finished its season with a 6-5 record, the worst mark since 1993.

Sports in Brief

SOCCER

Heavily favored College of Charleston took an early lead and held on for a 1-0 victory in the semifinals of the Southern Conference men’s soccer tournament Friday in Daniel Island, S.C.

Midfielder Ben Hollingsworth put in a goal in the 27th minute to give the Cougars all the firepower they needed.

Hollingsworth was named the College Soccer News Player of the Week after scoring the game-winner in all three of the champion Cougars’ matches during the tourney.

Corey Lugger, who scored the game-winner in ASU’s first-round victory over Furman last Tuesday, was named to All-Tournament team.
Carter Parrish was the only other ASU nominee to the 11-man team.

VOLLEYBALL

ASU volleyball continued their storybook season Sunday, overcoming a two games to zero Catamounts lead to take the final regular season match.
Chrissy Finch put up 20 kills and a match-high 26 digs to lead the Mountaineers.

Amber Mangrum set a personal record, putting in a career-high 72 assists to finish to her senior year with 4,272 career assists. That is a new ASU record.

ASU finishes the season 24-7 overall, 15-1 in Southern Conference play. They will be the top seed from the north, facing Davidson in the first round.
Western is the third seed from the north, and will face Georgia Southern in round one action.
