Appalachian State University’s annual chancellor-student
switch occurred once again Nov. 18. This year, senior marketing
major, Adam Bracket won the chance to walk in the chancellor's
shoes.
The Appalachian Student Ambassador-sponsored event, Chancellor-For-A-Day
occurs every year to collect canned foods for the Watauga
Hunger Coalition. “This year the event brought in over
4,000 pounds of food and almost $400,” said Ambassador
advisor Patrick Setzer.
The American Marketing Association, of which Bracket is president,
donated 268 cans of food. Anyone who donated a can of food
received an entry to a random drawing. Bracket's name was
drawn, making him this years winner.
The day started with a breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Bracket then
accompanied Dr. Harvey Durham to his 8 a.m. Freshman Seminar
class where he discussed the history of the campus.
“I had never taken the class so it was educational,”
Bracket said. “I learned a lot of history and the presentations
the class did were interesting.”

At 9:30 a.m., Durham and Bracket were formally introduced
at the opening ceremony.
“The opening ceremony is designed to allow students
in Cascades to meet the chancellor and Adam and to hear about
the plans for the day,” Setzer said. Durham made a
speech about the day and the two were on their way to the
Chancellor’s office.
“My favorite part was being with Adam in the office,”
Durham said.
In the office they were met by University Attorney David
H. Larry.
“We talked a lot about legal issues which were interesting
because it is something I don’t know a lot about,”
Bracket said.
Faculty Senate Chair Dr. Paul H. Gates later joined Durham
and Bracket.
“We discussed the interests and concerns of the faculty
and what things they are working on,” Durham said.
Once their meetings were complete, Durham and Bracket had
some time to talk with each other.
“We talked about family and work,” Bracket said.
“It was the most enjoyable part of my day. Harvey is
a really nice and funny man. I had a good time laughing with
him.”
The two then had lunch with the ambassadors at 12:30 p.m.
before Durham had to leave to fulfill some previous engagements.
“After Harvey left, I ran the show from about 1-3 p.m.,”
Bracket said.
He was taken to watch a video on the campus and visit the
Appalachian Alumni Center. “The best part was getting
my friends out of class,” Bracket said. “I would
walk into the classroom and say, my name is Chancellor Bracket
and I need to see so-and-so. I was Chancellor so I could
do anything.”
Bracket does admit though, that he may have abused his powers.
At the closing ceremonies Bracket was able to talk about
his day and thank everyone for the opportunity.
“I got to learn some awesome things and hang out with
a really cool guy,” he said. “The only thing
I would change is that I would have the chancellor sit in
on my classes.
“It was a fun day being with Adam,” said Durham.
“It just reconfirmed the fact that App has really top-notch
students.”
