| ASU student's letter to Elon's newspaper
|
To the Editor:
Hello my name is John, and I am a student at Appalachian
State. I am writing on behalf of the homecoming game
on Saturday. I was absolutely appalled by Elon fans
and their lack of school spirit. It was the worst display
of school pride that I have ever seen in my life as a football
fan. It is obvious that Elon fans lack any kind of
pride due to nine - tenths of crowd leaving after halftime.
There were even more App fans there than Elon fans, and we
live three hours away. Another indicator to me that
Elon houses soft, fair - weather fans was the fact that every
Phoenix fan was dressed like they were attending their private
country club induction. Elon, learn how to dress; it’s
not a fashion show, it’s a football game!!! I was surprised
when your team scored that the fans knew the difference between
a touchdown and a kickoff. I just want to say, you’re
welcome for our presence because it might have taught
you some type of lesson of what school pride is supposed
to be. No charge, it’s on us. Obviously
your “pride level” is based on the record of
your football team. Maybe next time we come to Burliville
the team might have a couple of W’s, and then Elon
might sell a ticket or two. If this weekend was homecoming,
I would hate to see what it was like on a regular Saturday.
Maybe the Phoenix just hasn’t really risen yet.
Thank you for your time. I hope that The Pendulum can somehow
boost some spirit.

| Football not only way to show pride |
To the Editor:
I’m writing this in regards to John Smith who wrote
into our school paper at Elon asking why we have so little
school spirit and don’t support our football team.
Well, why is school pride based on football game attendance?
Why does this one week mark how spirited this school is?
I’ll tell you right now, I didn’t go to the football
game. Does this mean that I’m an apathetic student?
No, it doesn’t. I’m just not a football fan.
Elon isn’t a sporty school; it’s a liberal arts
college.
Our school's focus isn’t based on how well a couple
dozen guys play football.
Just because I don’t go to football games doesn’t
mean I don’t love Elon. I, like a large part of Elon,
show my pride in a different way.
We all work in our own little ways to make the campus something
we can be proud of. All Elon students find some kind of niche
to help make Elon a better school.
I don’t show pride by going to a game that I’m
not interested in and waving a flag.
I show it by taking care of my school. I take pride in being
an Elon student because I know that maybe while we don’t
have the best football team, we’re getting one of the
best educations.
And in the end what does pride really come down to? Just
another football game; or an entire year of becoming a different
person?
