Meet a saint when the Department of Theatre and Dance presents
“A Man for All Seasons” in Valborg Theatre tomorrow
through Sunday.
“It’s a play with a beautifully written script
about a man who was later sainted by the church for his stand
against Henry VIII,” Director and Chair of the Department
of Theatre and Dance Dr. Susan Cole said.
Written by Robert Bolt, “A Man for All Seasons”
chronicles several years in the reign of Henry VIII, emphasizing
the conflict between the church and state that led to the
formation of the Anglican Church.
The basis of the play is the opposition expressed by Henry
VIII’s Chancellor Thomas Moore against Henry VIII’s
action of divorcing the Catholic Roman Church and Catherine
of Aragon. Thomas Moore, who is a devout Catholic, sticks
to his beliefs and morals that led to his tragic end, according
to the press release.
Cole said the play is a way of dramatizing events read in
history books and adding the human element to it.
“It’s fantasizing to play a real historic character
because it’s a different process getting to know your
character,” cast member senior Mindy N. Selby said.
“I like the play because it’s been a challenge
from the beginning. There is always something to be true
to history and at the same time true to the play,”
cast member freshman Nikki M. Caruso said.
Cole said the play has a wide range of emotions. It starts
off light with humor, but then there are deep touching moments
as well.
Cole said the message this play is trying to get out to the
audience is to stand up for one’s personal beliefs
and morals.
“I like the faith behind the play and the boldness
of the real historic figure of Thomas Moore,” cast
member junior Ben C. Mabry said.
“This was the first full-length play that I ever directed
almost forty years ago. I thought it would be appropriate
to revisit it as the last play I direct at [Appalachian State
University],” Cole said.
“The cast is a good mix of people who have been in
plays and are established and experienced and then people
who this is their first main stage production,” cast
member freshman Adam P. Ray said.
The cast includes Selby, Caruso, Mabry, Ray, Scott Hoppman,
Zach Lail, Jonathan Greene, Jeremy Moretz, John Bateman,
Luke Aeschleman, Ira Sargent, Jeremy Peterson, Joel Williams
and Alex Long.
“This is a chance to see history in a dramatized fashion,”
Cole said.
Performance begins at 8 p.m. each night. There will be an
additional show Sunday at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $6 for students and $10 for general admission.
