Ending a nine-year run, Weekend Excursion
returns to Legends Thursday for the last time, playing to
the crowd that was first introduced to lead singer Sam Fisher.
Recently the band announced that it would be calling it quits
after finishing its current tour, leaving a few fans disgruntled.
“When we announced our breakup on the [Web site], we
got a lot of e-mails saying that it was unfair the tour was
ending in Florida and not here,” Fisher said.
When Weekend Excursion finishes the currently planned tour,
they will put together a mini-farewell tour in February throughout
the state, giving N.C. fans one last show.
Started in 1994 by Jeff Foxworth and Cas Edmunds, the band
has been through numerous line-up changes before finally
settling down in 1999.
Weekend Excursion has been banging the club circuit throughout
the East Coast, finally cracking through some new doors in
the past four years.
When Fisher joined the group, the band took a serious turn
and decided it was time to make the band a full-time gig.
“We really started picking up fans in ’99. Within
two years we were regulars in places like Columbia (S.C.),
Athens (Ga.), Gainesville (Fla.) and even New York,”
Fisher said.
With four studio albums and one live album, the band consistently
poured out music over their nine-year tenure.
The newest CD, “Take Me Home,” was the first
on the Redeye Distribution label, giving a radio push for
the band’s notoriety throughout college towns.
The live CD (recorded in Raleigh), “Are We On Yet,”
released just last year, was another big hit for hardcore
WE fans.
The individual futures of the WE members look promising as
a few solo careers appear to sprout.“I’m going
to pursue a solo project, with a full-length coming out in
March of next year,” Fisher said.
Playing in Legends at 9 p.m. for the last time, tickets in
advance for students are $7 and $9 at the door.
“It’s funny because this show almost didn’t
happen. When we announced we were breaking up we finally
got a call. It’s kind of bittersweet, but we just want
people to come and see us,” Fisher said.
