Students stormed Kidd Brewer Stadium following the 28-21 win over the Georgia Southern University Eagles Saturday. Fans transported the goal post through a window of the Eagles' bus to Duck Pond. The victory altered the balance of power in Southern Conference play.
The sound heard echoing throughout Kidd Brewer Stadium was more than just the snap of a goalpost on its way to Duck Pond.
It was also the balance of power in the Southern Conference shifting toward Appalachian State University.
Appalachian head coach Jerry Moore, who battled pneumonia all week, said he could not feel any better about his team’s 28-21 victory over Georgia Southern or his team’s perseverance after starting the season 1-3.
“A month ago everyone was jumping off our boat,” Moore said.
“You could hear them splashing here, there, and everywhere. Now there are a few people crawling back on.”
Facing their second top-10 team in two weeks, the Mountaineers began the game in a 3-5 defensive set in hopes of outsmarting and containing the Eagles’ option.

The Mountaineers got off to a quick start, running the Eagles all over the court in a 14-4 start. Ga. Southern fought back to pull to within four points, but after a timeout by Mountaineer head coach Chad Callihan, Appalachian won 30-25.
The Mountaineers and Eagles fought tooth and nail in the second game, tying at eight before ASU put on an 8-4 run. Ga. Southern fought back to go up 22-19 before the teams tied again at 24. The Eagles then went on a 6-3 spurt to win the game.
