Voting for student
senate elections for the Student Government Association (SGA) began
yesterday.
All voting is done online, Lauren N. Linville SGA vice-president
said. Students can log on to AppalNET and choose between 75-80 nominees.
Twenty of the total 75-80 students running for senate are vying
for off-campus seats.
It is not really a large number of people running, but I think
we have quality people
and not just those interested in putting
student government on their transcripts, Linville said. She
said she has received e-mails everyday from students curious about
the election and issues.
Linville said each residence hall on campus is allotted two seats
in the senate. You can only vote for where you live,
Linville said.
SGA posted contact tables on campus for students who were interested
in running for senate, Linville said.
Students running for the senate were required to have their nomination
forms turned in last Friday. Each contestant is allowed to spend
$25 dollars on promotion, and each must ask his or her resident
director, if applicable, to put flyers and posters on the walls,
Linville said.
Linville said students need only 25 votes to win a seat. Those who
do not win the election can obtain a seat by presenting a petition
to SGA with 100 signatures from fellow students.
Election winners will take office Thursday afternoon, Linville said.
Senatorial training will be held next Tuesday.
Those elected will be able to select which SGA committee they would
like to be a part of, Linville said.
Senators must hold a 2.0 GPA and schedule one office hour per week.
Each senator must also attend the weekly senate and committee meetings.
One type of community service per semester is also required, Linville
said.
The people we are looking for is people who want to put an
effort into it, Linville said. |
