New Appalachian House in Washington, D.C. under negotiation By Carrie Baker

   Appalachian State University officials chose to keep Appalachian’s presence in Washington, D.C.
   The university is currently in the negotiation phase for a new town house to replace the old Appalachian House in Washington, D.C. Interim Provost Kenneth E. Peacock said at the Sept. 5 academic affairs committee meeting.

Ehrenreich: Education not rising with tuition by David Forbes

      Students should be angry about rising tuition and falling services from colleges, author Barbara Ehrenreich said Friday.
   “I don’t know why [students] aren’t enraged, why everybody isn’t on buses to Raleigh and Washington D.C. right now to protest this. Think about the fact we’re paying $1 million a week for the occupation of Iraq, and we can’t afford to pay for quality higher education?” Ehrenreich said.

Tenant rights not well known by students By Leslie Rasimas

   Miles away from mom, dad, their checkbooks and legal advice, students become lost in a sea of leases, landlords and rent.
    Students need to know their rights and responsibilities as tenants in Boone to prevent being taken advantage of, said Karla P. Rusch, assistant director of Student Judicial Affairs.
    Rusch said the issue she advised most students on last year was landlord-tenant problems.
    “All I can do through the legal clinic is give advice and information,” she said. “Many students have concerns regarding their rights.”
    The North Carolina General Assembly’s general statutes 42-51 and 42-52 address permitted uses of a security deposit and landlord’s obligations to a tenant.

SGA commemorates 9-11 with ribbons By Justin Boulmay

   Ribbons decorated with red, white and blue will be distributed outside Welborn Hall and the Post Office this Wednesday and Thursday to commemorate the tragic events of 9-11, SGA Director of State and National Affairs Paul A. Funderburk, said.
   Funderburk is the SGA cabinet member in charge of implementing the ribbon idea, a step down from last year’s activities, which included ceremonies sposnored by SGA. There were a few reasons for SGA choosing to do less this year, he said.

Senatorial race underway for SGA By Justin Boulmay

   Voting for student senate elections for the Student Government Association (SGA) began yesterday.
    “All voting is done online,” Lauren N. Linville SGA vice-president said. Students can log on to AppalNET and choose between 75-80 nominees.
    Twenty of the total 75-80 students running for senate are vying for off-campus seats.
