The first University Recreation All Nighter will be held Feb. 28-29 in the Quinn Recreation Center.

The Quinn Center will open its doors 10 p.m. Saturday and will not close until 3 a.m. Sunday.

“It’s going to be like a lock in,” UREC Publicity Programmer Justin Gomez said.

All Appalachian State University students are invited to participate in a number of events. Students can compete in basketball, volleyball and racquetball tournaments, as well as a triathlon, relay races, potato sack races and a weight lifting competition. Students can sign up for to participate in the competitions prior to Saturday, or they can sign up at the Quinn Center the night of.

Numerous aerobics classes will also be taught throughout the event, and the weights and workout area will be available as it normally is.

Jesse Anderson, UREC Administrative Graduate Assistant, said students can come and go as they please. She said students can participate in whichever events they want.

Gomez said UREC is hoping for a big turnout in order to make this an annual event. Anderson said expectations are high.

Gomez said the event will be lots of fun, and also give students a chance to get a good workout in before Spring Break. Anderson said the all nighter is a good way for students to have some fun before midterms.

UREC had been discussing planning an event like this for a while to generate interest in recreation on campus, Gomez said.

Joe Carter, director of UREC, said the all nighter gives students something different to do during the winter months when weather prohibits a lot of outdoor activities.

The event also offers students a positive alternative to what they might normally do on the weekends. Gomez said the all nighter goes along with UREC’s promotion of a health, active lifestyle.

“Health is what our department is about,” Anderson said.

Carter said UREC wants to give students opportunities to find an activity they enjoy and can stick with even after they leave Appalachian State.

Carter said UREC is one of many ways Appalachian offers students diversity in activities.

He said UREC’s job is to create excitement about recreation on campus, and the all nighter is an excellent way for students to see what UREC is about.

Along with activities, free food and prizes sponsored by Dominos Pizza, Joe’s Italian Kitchen, Los Arcoiris, Ruby Tuesdays, Hungry Howies, The Sports Fanatic, Woodlands Barbeque and Mile High Sub, will be given away. The first 100 students through the door will receive a free T-shirt.

Anderson said support from local businesses has been great.

Casey Bowen, UREC Intramural Programmer, said the sponsors have been willing to give away anything they can afford for the all nighter.

Carter said UREC employees have worked hard organizing this event for students.
