Sandler's '50 First Dates' offers mediocre romantic humor
As the lights went up and the credits rolled for “50 First Dates,” I found myself pondering one question: “What did this movie prove?”

Well, after deep thought, intensive meditation and aromatherapy, I’ve reached one conclusion.

“50 First Dates” shows it is entirely socially acceptable to not only seduce, but to make out with the mentally handicapped.

I’ve got to tell you, the previews for “50 First Dates” are really funny. The clips shown on Leno, Conan and the like have been downright hysterical.

Sadly, if you’ve seen the clips or the previews, you’ve hit the only really funny parts in the entire movie.

Though labeled a “romantic comedy,” the subject matter of “50 First Dates” is fairly dark.

Greenbriar triple feature celebrates birthday

Happy birthday to the Greenbriar Theatre!

Greenbriar celebrates its first anniversary tomorrow with a triple feature starting at 5 p.m.

“I feel the Greenbriar Theatre serves the purpose of providing a state-of-the-art film venue that enhances the overall intellectual climate on the Appalachian campus. It is an improved means to a long-established end,” Associate Director of Student Programs Philip J. Arnold said.

“Greenbriar is an amazing facility that puts us in a different class and is a great resource for all students,” Plemmons Student Union Technical Director Duane B. Rowland said.

'Tonight Show' drummer performs with Jazz Ensemble

Appalachian State University’s Jazz Ensemble group will play Saturday with legendary “Tonight Show” drummer Ed Shaughnessy.

Known for his work during the show’s Johnny Carson years, Shaughnessy is one of the most influential drummers playing today.

Shaughnessy has performed with countless jazz greats, including Count Basie, Charles Mingus, Stan Kenton and Billie Holliday.

Dubconscious rolls into Boone

When fans see a 1968 church bus with “Word of Life” painted on the side, they know that Dubconscious is rolling into town. The six-piece reggae band transformed the old vehicle into its tour bus in order to travel and perform throughout the southeast.

“Word of Life” is not only the name of the church that previously owned the bus, but is also the title of Dubconscious’ most recent CD that was released Feb. 13.

“The Importance of Being Earnest,” the Oscar Wilde classic play sponsored by the Lees-McRae College Performing Arts shows at Hayes Auditorium in Blowing Rock. The play runs through Feb. 22 with shows at 7:30 p.m. each night, and a 2 p.m. show on the Feb. 22.

Laura Unger and Doug Kaufman perform Christian music at Jimmy’s Java at 8 p.m. There is no cover charge.

“Love Actually” shows at I.G. Greer Theatre at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Admission is $1.

APPS brings a DJ Hip-Hop Party to Legends at 10 p.m. Admission is $3. The event is BYOB, six-pack limit with proper ID.

The Wind Ensemble and conductor Dr. William Gora perform at 8 a.m. in Farthing Auditorium. Admission is free. For more information, call 262-3020.

The Part Time Blues Band plays Canyons at 10 p.m. There is no cover charge.

The Movies in History Film Series brings the 1971 Italian film “Garden of the Finzi-Continis” to Greenbriar Theatre at 2 p.m. The film has English subtitles, and won an Academy Award.

Geno’s Restaurant and Sports Lounge brings the Comedy Zone for two shows at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m.

Darlyne Cain plays Jimmy’s Java at 8 p.m. Admission is $3.
