For 39 minutes, Appalachian State played its ugliest basketball of the season and trailed Western Carolina University by seven points.

But in a frenzied final minute, ASU caught up to Western to tie the game but fell just short yet again, giving the team its eighth straight loss.

With one minute left and Appalachian down, 54-61, Chris McFarland hit a short baseline jump shot.

McFarland then stole the inbounds pass and hit a long three-pointer to chip the Catamount lead to two points, 61-59.

The next Western pass went out of bounds and Noah Brown found Derek Thomas under the basket for a game-tying dunk, capping a seven point run in 20 seconds.

Western superstar Kevin Martin hit one foul shot the next time down the court after being fouled by Thomas to give the Catamounts a one-point lead.
