Our Perspective ... Welcome, charge to Chancellor Peacock

The search has ended.

After nearly six months of meetings, interviews and forums, the Chancellor Search Committee has found Appalachian State University’s sixth chancellor—Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock.

The search began within a month after former chancellor Francis T. Borkowski resigned due to personal reasons last summer.

Peacock has long been a member of the Appalachian State University family and The Appalachian welcomes him to his new role at this university.

As Peacock takes office, a new era at Appalachian will begin.

Be responsible for your pets, financially stable
Students who feel they are mature and financially stable enough to bring home a new addition to the family should think again.

Pets are the exact equivalent of children. They need clothes and accessories, food bowls, shots, check-ups and an occasional diaper or two.

There are students who are prepared for the responsibility. Some people are lonely and in need of a companion. Others are perfectly qualified to take on the challenge of being a mommy or daddy.

I love animals, and I would encourage anyone to save a Fido or a Mimi from the pound. But the feces will hit the fan when students do not take proper care of their babies.

Hip-hop becomes more popular in America
While it is no question that rap, hip hop and R&B styles of music have larger fan bases now than ever before, it is becoming clear that these genres of music are also gaining respect and acknowledgment that, up until very recently, they did not have.

This year’s Grammy nominations accurately reflected the widespread popularity of hip-hop – the majority of nominees were from the category – but just a few years ago there were separate “hip-hop” categories, which were rarely even broadcast on the actual show.

Hip-hop musician Kurtis Blow described the beginning of hip-hop.
