Senior Jerry Beard (34) runs
for a 56-yard rush that set the Mountaineers up for the touchdown
made by Joe Burchette against Maine.
The seniors sat somberly during
the post-game interviews while head coach Jerry Moore tried to offer
some explanation as to how his team fell in the first round of the
NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.
The University of Maine had walked out of Kidd Brewer Stadium with
a 14-13 win over Appalachian State University and a trip to Statesboro,
Ga. for a second-round game against Georgia Southern University.
We just came up a play or two short, Moore said.
The Mountaineers took a 13-7 lead over the Black Bears in the fourth
quarter with a Mark Wright field goal.
Nearly five minutes later, Maine received an offensive pass interference
penalty, placing them at first down and 25.
The penalty initially appeared to give ASU an advantage and a chance
to secure its lead.
Marcus Williams then broke free on a 41-yard touchdown run to make
the score 14-13 in Maines favor.
Appalachians follow-up drive only gained
26 yards and ended in a punt.

The mens volleyball club went undefeated
in pool play before falling to University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill in the semi-finals of the tournament that was played
Nov. 8 and 9.
Among the teams they defeated in the pool play,
the matches before the tournament, were North Carolina State University,
Lee College and a team of older men that included an ex-professional
beach volleyball player.
