Mountaineers hold on to the jug, tied for second in conference James Nix

    The Mountaineers proved victorious in the battle for the Old Mountain Jug as they overcame Western Carolina University 24-14 Saturday at Whitmire Stadium in Cullowhee.
   Appalachian State University (8-3, 6-2 Southern Conference) took an early lead in the first half, but the Catamounts (5-6, 3-5 SoCon) used a strong defensive performance to keep the score close.
   Then, late in the third quarter, junior running back Sean Jackson broke free to the left side of the line for a 38-yard touchdown run.    This gave Appalachian at 17-7 lead with a little over a quarter remaining in the game.
   Early in the fourth quarter, senior quarterback Joe Burchette found senior full back Joey Hoover in the end zone to give Appalachian its largest lead of the game.

       Three times this season Appalachian State University’s defense gave up over 400 yards of total offense. All three times the score at the end of the game resulted in a loss for the Mountaineers.
   Marshall University, Georgia Southern University and Wofford College all made the Appalachian defense look as though they were standing still, while the offense couldn’t get enough going to compensate for the yardage being posted against them.

      The Appalachian State University women’s volleyball team wrapped up their season with a 3-0 victory over the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Saturday.
   The three games were dominated by the Mountaineers both defensively and offensively as they held the Spartans to a .072 hitting percentage and tallied a .244 hitting percentage of their own.
   “We’ve been working a lot on our defense,” said head coach Chris Redding. “As far as our blocking position and digging around it and the last few matches, we’re starting to see it pay off.”
