Our Perspective . . . Find alternate fund sources for proposal
Programs currently funded by students’ fees such as Health Services, educational and recreational programs and Cultural Affairs are being asked by the administration to forego a 5 percent annual increase their budget generally receives each year to make way for varsity athletic facility enhancements.
Students usually pay this increase each year to fund better services, equipment and facilities in areas that directly affect them on a daily basis.
The athletics proposal will have students pay for $13 million of the planned $32 million needed for renovations and additions to athletic facilities most students will never see, much less use.
Seniors undergo the five stages of graduation

COMMENTARY

With the claustrophobic walls of graduation and indecision rapidly closing in, many seniors will experience a certain level of anxiety associated with an undisclosed future and the whirlwind of their final college days.
In their final days as socially adjusting undergraduates, seniors are likely to experience a myriad of emotions similar to those known by psychologists as “The Five Stages of Grief.” The stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.
Assumptions: The worst kind of stereotypes

Outward appearances seem to be the theme du jour on the opinion page of The Appalachian. Despite legitimate efforts to look beyond the “book’s cover,” it is not rational to ignore the first impression you form about your peers and neighbors.
First impressions are usually based on stereotypes. Stereotypes are generalized conceptions of certain people, groups or ideas. They are useful because they prevent us from having to analyze everything critically. On a basic level, stereotypes tell us the functions of things. For instance, when you hear of an engineer, you assume he or she is intelligent. There are specific cases of engineers who do not fit this mold, but those would be the outliers.
