The Annual Hunger and Homelessness Week will be held Nov.11-15 to raise awareness about hunger and homelessness, specifically to cultivate a pro-active attitude, said Jenny Koehn, Appalachian State University’s community service coordinator.
On Monday, the Appalachian State University chapter of Habitat for Humanity will hold its Stair Construction from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in front of the Cascades entrance of Plemmons Student Union.
They will construct deck stairs for two Habitat for Humanity homes. Participants may lend a hand for a few hours or a few minutes. The project will continue through Tuesday if necessary.
“We want people to come and to see what we are about and how every person can make a difference,” said Seth W. Wiseman, a junior construction major and president of Appalachian’s Habitat for Humanity.
Club Council will sponsor a panel discussion, “Faces of Homelessness,” Monday night in the Table Rock Room of Plemmons Student Union from 7-8:30 p.m.
Representatives from the Hospitality House and other local shelters will attend and present information about homelessness. There will also be a question-and-answer session.
On Tuesday, Habitat for Humanity is sponsoring its Sleep-Out Event on Duck Pond Field. This activity will simulate the reality of being homeless as students sleep on Duck Pond Field in cardboard boxes. Students who wish to participate should bring a sleeping bag and wear warm clothes.
The Hunger Banquet will be held in Blue Ridge Ballroom of Plemmons Student Union on Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m.
The event will address the growing hunger epidemic worldwide. Tickets are $5, or $4 with the donation of a canned good. Tickets can be purchased at the Information Desk of the student union the week prior to the event.
A canned-food sculpture contest will be held Thursday in the Multicultural Center, on the lower level of the student union from 12-2 p.m. Prizes will be given for the most creative sculpture.
“I participated in a number of the events last year. I gained a deeper understanding of the extreme harshness of poverty not only present in American society but worldwide,” said Courtney M. Housand, a sophomore sociology and criminology major.
Many organizations will participate in Hunger and Homelessness Week.
CSRA is sponsoring a Resident Assistant Auction Nov. 11-22. All proceeds will benefit the Hospitality House.
Crossroads Coffee House will also raise money for the Hospitality House. Their staff’s goal is $200. For every person who donates at least $1, drip coffee is free Friday.
Hunger and Homelessness Week is sponsored by the Appalachian State Service Coalition, a partnership between Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT) and the Student Government Association.
