At this point, a win is a win
for the Appalachian State University football team.
After back-to-back losses to Georgia Southern
University and Wofford College, the Mountaineers raised their spirits
Saturday with a 20-17 win over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Its like our first win, just to get
back on that winning track, said ASU quarterback Joe Burchette.
It lifts you up a little bit.

The Appalachian State University
mens soccer team played to a 2-1 victory and a three-game
win streak against the visiting Georgia Southern University Eagles
Saturday afternoon.
The win pushed the Mountaineers record to 12-4-1 overall and
6-2 in Southern Conference (SoCon) play.
The 16 combined shots in the first half kept both goalkeepers busy,
but they were both up to the challenge, not allowing a goal until
late in the first half.
Appalachian junior Geoff Christman broke through to start the scoring
at the 42:02 point when he found the back of the net off of a rebounded
shot.
Shortly into the second half, the Mountaineers were able to add
to the lead when junior Jannis Riesz put a direct kick by the Eagle
goalkeeper to make the score 2-0.
With four minutes left in regulation, the Eagles were able to slip
one by senior goalkeeper Greg Brooks, but the score proved to be
too little too late.
Appalachian out-shot the Eagles 16-13. Brooks lead the way with
six saves.
The Mountaineers finish the regular season on Nov. 10 when the College
of Charleston Cougars make the trek to Kidd Brewer Stadium.

| ASU cross country sweeps SoCon championships,
holds record for wins |

Sports Beat |
For the third time
in school history, the Appalachian State University mens and
womens cross country teams swept the Southern Conference (SoCon)
titles. The wins marked the ninth for the women and eighth for the
men since joining the SoCon. With 17 titles between them, the Mountaineers
have won more cross country titles than any other SoCon team, past
or present.
On the womens side, three Mountaineers led the way to victory
in record-setting fashion. Senior Sarah Primeau, sophomore Katie
Sujkowski and freshman Jennifer Kelley finished respectively ranked
second, third and fourth. This performance puts them as the most
dominant trio in conference history because never before have three
runners from the same team finished in the top four at the SoCon
Championship.
The Mountaineers 43 points outpaced the University of Tennessee
at Chattanooga (UTC) by 17. Davidson College, Furman University
and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro rounded out the
top five teams.
Chattanoogas Shannon Womack earned SoCon Runner of the Year,
Appalachians Jennifer Kelley earned Freshman of the Year and
Jen Straub was named Coach of the Year for her work at Davidson.
The men were able to complete a three-peat by winning this years
title and had two runners earn all-conference honors. Junior Michael
Reed finished fifth and sophomore Ryan Toler took seventh. Reed
and Toler earned all-SoCon honors for the second year in a row.
Junior Carson Blackwelder, senior Franklin Manchester and senior
Derrick Williamson finished 11th, 19th and 21st respectively to
round out the ASU top five.
As on the womens side, ASU finished above UTC for the victory,
with Western Carolina University, East Tennessee State University
and Furman University taking the top five positions.
Chattanoogas Gediminas Banevicius earned Runner of the Year,
ETSUs James Grufferty is Freshman of the Year and Appalachians
Mike Curcio earned his fourth Coach of the Year award. |
