Campus Resident Student
Association (CRSA] recently received the North Carolina Community
Service Program of the Month for September.
The award, given out by the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH),
is designed to recognize outstanding contributions to college and
university residence halls, according to the NRHH Web site.
The nominated Appalachian Idol program was designed
to raise money for the Miller family of New York and offer an enjoyable
experience for students. The final total of money raised was more
than $1,000, said Brian S. Merritt, CRSA president.
It was great to be nominated, said Katy Ellis, vice
president of finance for CRSA. To know that it was voted the
best is awesome.
The contest was a takeoff on the popular American Idol
television program. Preliminary competitions were held in individual
residence halls, and a campus-wide event held at Legends crowned
the winner.
NRHH is a recognition branch of the National Association of College
Universities and Residence Halls (NACURH), according to the NRHH
Web site.
Membership to NRHH is restricted to students who have lived on campus
for more than a year, Ellis said.
Chapter membership is restricted to 1 percent of students living
in residence halls.
Members of the NRHH nominate people/programs for the monthly awards
in 11 separate categories: Advisor, Community, Executive Board Member,
NCC, NRHH Chapter, Social Program, Educational Program, Community
Service Program, Residential Assistant, Spotlight and Student.
Winners on this level then go on to the state level before proceeding
to the regional level.
Other winners for September on the university level include: Advisor

- Adam Brien, Hoey Hall; Executive Board Member of the Month - Jessi
Lindberg, CRSA; Educational Program of the Month - CRSA Leadership
