The Appalachian State
University mens soccer team brings their 10-4-1 record back
to the strong walls of Kidd Brewer Stadium to play Virginia Military
Institute on Oct. 29. With three games remaining before the Southern
Conference tournament, the Mountaineers finally get a multi-game
home stand. The game versus VMI will be their second home game of
the season.
Were looking forward to playing at home, said
senior Brandon Garner. Were trying to get a lot of people
out to support us. Weve had a good season so far and want
to continue the good work.
ASU traveled to Charleston, S.C., to play The Citadel on Saturday
and came up with a 7-1 victory. The win snapped a two-game losing
streak for the Mountaineers.
We were due for a game where we score a lot of goals,
Garner said. Winning like that feels really good and gives
us a lot of confidence. The last two times we played them we only
won by one goal so it was good to make a statement.
We havent beat a team like that in a while, said
freshman Steve Mellor. Everyone got to play and it was a big
relief to snap that losing streak.
The projected top seed in the SoCon tournament is Furman University
who beat ASU 3-2 in double overtime on Oct. 2. With three wins in
Boone, the Mountaineers could wrap up a No. 2 seed in the conference
tournament. This would give them a first round bye and a day off.
Everyone is excited about trying to win out and get the second
seed, Garner said. That would be big because right now
we probably wouldnt get a bid to the NCAA tournament so we
need to win the conference tournament to get a bid.
After 14 road games the Mountaineers have become accustomed to the
lifestyle of bus trips and unfamiliar stadiums but are looking forward
to sleeping in their own beds and playing on the turf of Kidd Brewer
Stadium.
Road trips arent bad, Mellor said. Playing
on turf is a big advantage because no one else plays on it.
The only change the team will make is to practice on the turf again
instead of preparing on grass for away games.
Head coach Dave Golan has been stressing to players to keep intensity
levels high and finish teams earlier.
The home stretch begins with VMI today then Georgia Southern University
on Nov. 2. The soccer team will wrap up the regular season on Nov.
10 against the College of Charleston. |
