Rain no deterrent for Homecoming magic Ashley Middleton

RSAs, clubs, Greek and University Funded Organizations participated in Saturday’s “Magic in the Mountains” Homecoming parade. The parade that wound around Rivers, Hardin, King and Water streets drew spectators from all aspects of the university despite the constant drizzle.

Shirtless fans cheer for ASU at Kidd Brewer Stadium Saturday. Homecoming attendance surpassed the stadium’s 16,650 seating capacity as 17,297 fans packed in to the game.
   This weekend, Appalachian State University students, faculty and alumni celebrated Homecoming 2002, themed “Magic in the Mountains.” The campus came alive with events starting Thursday night and ending late Saturday.

Homecoming Court
    The winners for this year’s Homecoming Court were announced at halftime of the football game. Adam B. Houseman, a business management major from Rock Hill, S.C. and Doughton Residence Hall representative, was crowned Homecoming King. The title of Homecoming Queen went to Alicia J. Walker, an elementary education major from Elkin who represented Tau Kappa Epsilon.
    Members of the Homecoming Court included: Ryan M. Eller, Chip D. Jetton, Kyle M. Johnson, Jonathan D Kappler, Ashley E. Hawks, Katie N. McGuire, Peyton L. Myers and Kimberly A. Wood.
   
   

Banner Competition
   Winners for the banner contest were announced Wednesday morning. Banners have been on display in Plemmons Student Union for the past week. Tau Kappa Epsilon took home first place in the Greek category with their banner, which featured an Appalachian State University football player bursting through a mountain. Second place went to Alpha Delta Pi and third to Chi Omega.
    In clubs, Habitat for Humanity, whose banner depicted Yosef in a house of cards sitting on top of the Wofford College mascot, a terrier, grabbed first place. Circle K took second place and the Black and Gold Elite Dancers were awarded third.
    Frank Hall won for the Resident Student Association (RSA) category. Frank’s banner featured Yosef as a magician, peering into a crystal ball that predicted an ASU win over Wofford at the football game. Appalachian Heights Apartments came in second and third went to Doughton Residence Hall.
    The Appalachian took home the first place prize for the University Funded Organization (UFO) category. The banner featured Yosef depicted in Disney’s “Fantasia.” Second place went to Appalachian Ambassadors and third to the Women’s Center.

Pep Rally
   The “Spirit Under the Stars” pep rally was held at Legends at 6 p.m. on Friday night. The pep rally was originally set to take place in Duck Pond Field, but because of poor weather conditions, the bonfire and fireworks were cancelled.

Homecoming Parade
    At 10 a.m. Saturday morning, the Homecoming Parade took place. The parade started on Rivers Street and ended on King Street. Winners of the float competition were Kappa Delta for Greek organizations, the National Residence Hall and Campus Resident Student Association for University Funded Organizations and Coltrane Residence Hall for Resident Student Associations.The Appalachian Ambassadors Alumni celebrated their 25th anniversary this year. On Friday, the group held a “Past and Present Gathering” at the Mellow Mushroom in Blowing Rock. Saturday night, Chancellor and Mrs. Frank Borkowski held an anniversary reception at The Appalachian House.

Alumni Activities
    The African American Alumni held a reunion in the Blue Ridge Ballroom of the Plemmons Student Union to socialize, network and look at photographs on the “Do You Remember When?” board. On Saturday after the game, there was a meeting addressing recruiting members of the African American community into Appalachian, as well as getting African American Alumni involved with the university.
    Other alumni departments and organizations that held gatherings were the Baptist Student Union, Biology, Communication, Family and Consumer Sciences, Former Athletes, Geography and Planning, History, Housing and Residence Life, Marching Band, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, and the Walker College of Business.
