Organizing the Appalachian State University Homecoming Weekend is no magic trick, given the array of activities planned to get students and alumni motivated for the game against Wofford College.
The events kick off today with performing act Jump, Little Children, which will perform in Legends at 9 p.m. Cost is $6 in advance for Appalachian State students and $8 for the public and on the night of the show. The event is BYOB with a six-pack limit and proper identification.
Tomorrow night, the “Spirit Under the Stars” pep rally will be held on Duck Pond Field, where students can witness the infamous lip sync contest. The Food Services Cookout begins at 6:30 p.m.
“Pending the weather, everything is going to be fun; hopefully students will get involved,” said Brad Vest, co-chair of the Appalachian State Homecoming Committee.
Immediately following the contest, a bonfire will be lit and fireworks set off.
After the fireworks die down, students can migrate to Plemmons Student Union to see the Miss Black and Gold Pageant, beginning at 9 p.m. with a $3 admission charge.
If students would like to choose a different form of entertainment, Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys will be in Farthing Auditorium at 9 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance for Appalachian State students and $10 for the general public and on the night of the show.
On Saturday, the annual Homecoming Parade will begin the day at 10 a.m. It will circle campus starting on River Street and ending on King Street.
The parade floats are judged on originality, creativity, appearance and behavior of participants.
The four categories of winning floats will be displayed in Kidd Brewer Stadium during the game.
From 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., the “Magician’s Tailgate Party” will be held on Duck Pond Field. The black and gold alumni tent will have music, giveaways and food vendors.
The event of the weekend, the football game between the Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Wofford College Terriers will occur at 2 p.m. in Kidd Brewer Stadium. Radio Paratroopers are scheduled to bring in the game ball.
The overall winners of the Homecoming competition are to be announced at halftime following the announcement of the king and queen.
More than 80 different student organizations are participating in the Homecoming competition, including Greeks, university-funded organizations (UFOs), clubs and Resident Student Associations (RSAs).
Each group will receive a cash prize and a plaque for placing.
The Annual Step Show is Saturday night after the game at 8 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium with a $5 admission.
The festivities come to a close with the “After Party” at 10 p.m. in Legends. The event is BYOB and has a $5 admission fee.
