Our Perspective . . . Voter registration campaign successful
Campus groups mustered over 750 new student voters on campus
In the midst of Student Government Association (SGA) bickering over issues such as whether or not to use cabinet member plaque money to feed the homeless, campus organizations have joined to increase student county voter turnout.
The recent voter registration drives held by SGA, the College Democrats, the College Republicans, Campus Resident Student Association (CRSA) and students affiliated with Students Actively Volunteering with the Environment (S.A.V.E.) were met with large success.
SGA gathered more than 150 new student voters for Watauga County. The College Democrats and students affiliated with S.A.V.E. collected 300 more voters through the “Rock the Vote” rally Oct. 9. Add the College Republicans and the CRSA tally and the number is roughly 750 new student voters.

This opinion page in recent past has been filled with columns covering everything from war to cigarette smoke, “Sex in the City” to images of Keith Richards. While I give everyone here on the newspaper staff a lot of credit for their wonderfully written columns, I am going to touch on a much more sensitive issue on this campus and in the world today … race.
Controversy dictates careful vote consideration

In recent weeks, the media has been full of controversy over many issues. Political campaigns, the war on terrorism and the potential war with Iraq have fueled arguments that make their way into the nation’s newspapers, magazines and airwaves.
The presence of controversy and argument in the media does not, in and of itself, affect the nation negatively. On the contrary, it challenges citizens to think about important issues like political candidates and the possibility of war.
