   Appalachian State University is preparing for growth in student enrollment due to a national trend of larger numbers of students entering colleges and universities.
   Different areas at Appalachian are “stepping up to the plate” in order to deal with the increase in students, said Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs Jane P. Helm.

   The inevitable budget cuts recently approved by the North Carolina legislature left staff members from universities across the state without pay raises and faculty members searching for means to assist their co-workers.
   Faculty members at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro have united in a fundraising effort they hope will raise $250,000 to be donated in time for the holidays for their nearly 1,000 staff members.

The Turchin Center, located on King Street, is still not completed.
   Despite a two-month delay in construction, the staff of the Turchin Center is optimistic about the new building.
   Once slated for a January 2003 completion, the university now plans to move into the building sometime in March.

   The annual Student Discount Card, having undergone a major overhaul, is scheduled to make its debut within the next week.
   The card, organized by the Student Government Association (SGA) , includes 103 businesses in Boone and Blowing Rock where card holders receive a discount.

   The Partnership for Watauga’s Future will be sponsoring a community walk Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. to celebrate the new Doc and Merle Watson Scenic Highway.
   Doc Watson, world-renowned musician and native of Watauga County, will make an appearance in support of the walk.
