Ninth-ranked Northeastern University visited Kidd Brewer Stadium Friday to take on the Appalachian State University field hockey squad. The light mist and Northeastern offense persisted throughout the game as ASU fell 5-1.
“To fight the entire time like we did is a great accomplishment,” said assistant coach Ryan Langford.
“Not once did we give up out there, the score ended up 5-1 but we’re still proud of them, they did a good job.”
Northeastern was led by sophomore Liane Dixon, who not only opened the scoring against the Mountaineers but also pulled the hat trick. At 11:32 into the match, Dixon was able to break free to score an unassisted goal. Less than two minutes later Dixon managed to duplicate her earlier performance by scoring another unassisted goal.
Appalachian was playing defense most of the first half but did have a few good opportunities they were unable to capitalize on.
The second half was more of the same from Northeastern and a struggle for ASU to keep pace.
After finding some space in the Appalachian defense, Northeastern senior Sarah Broderick had an excellent scoring opportunity.
However, the ASU defense was giving nothing out free, so she was fouled, resulting in a penalty stroke. Broderick was able to make good on this opportunity and the score was pushed to 3-0.
Northeastern sophomore Mari Creatini scored on an assist from junior Sarah Webber, then Dixon completed her hat trick by scoring another unassisted goal to make the score 5-0.
ASU could not get much going offensively in the second half until the waning minutes of the game. The squad was able to gain their first penalty corner with 30 seconds left, after another foul time had expired, but the Mountaineers would get one last chance to get on the board.
Junior Nara C. Brookes would make good on the opportunity and end the game on a good note for ASU.
Junior Bridgette A. Burkhardt and senior Jennifer N. Beecher assisted the goal.
“That is the sign of a good team right there,” said Langford. “The time is up, we’re losing 5-0, it doesn’t matter we’re still giving 100 percent. That’s the quality of girls we have here.”
The loss drops ASU to 3-6, 0-2 in conference play. The team will make a Virginia loop this weekend as they take on Virginia Commonwealth University Oct. 5 and the University of Richmond Oct. 6.
The next action to take place in Boone will be Oct. 9 when Appalachian will look to get its first conference victory against Radford University.
