Doughton RA and senior middle education major from Jacksonville Amber L. Spencer helps sophomore resident Zack Thunberg from Mooresville.
The Department of Housing and Residence Life is currently seeking to fill four available resident assistant (RA) positions.
The positions, available in Doughton, Gardner, Coltrane and Eggers residence halls, have been open since the beginning of the academic year.
Rick L. Geis, director of Housing and Residence Life, said while the department has interviewed applicants, it is not going to hire in haste.
Students have picked up applications throughout the semester, and the department is close to hiring one applicant, said Geis.
The open positions are expected to be filled by fall break at the latest, said Geis.
In the meantime, the other RAs in the buildings are picking up the slack.
“It’s not a whole lot to do, and I have seven other RAs, so we are not short-staffed,” said Keith S. Ridgeway, resident director of Eggers and a master’s candidate in the College of Student Development.
The vacancy in Eggers Hall is due to a rule violation, said Geis.
The department had to fill 12 RA positions during the 2001-02 academic year because of various violations, a drastic increase from 1999-2000 and 2000-01, when there were just five openings each year.
In a typical academic year, one or two positions may open at the beginning of the year, but there were 63 RA positions to fill this semester, said Geis.
In order to be an RA, a student must have spent at least one semester in on-campus housing, have at least a 2.50 GPA, and have a clear judicial record.
Students who have held leadership positions in other clubs are the type of people the department is looking for, said Geis.
