Bosnian refugee finds solace, remembers violent past April Klaassen

Freshman political science major Teo Vasilj, fled Bosnia for Germany with his family at the age of eight.
    As his family’s car moved through the war-stricken streets of Bosnia, 8-year-old Teo Vasilj peered through the car window. He stared, fascinated and afraid, at the barricaded streets and the soldiers who stood beside them, guns in hand.
   Each time the authorities stopped the car, the Vasilj family froze, hoping they would eventually make it across the border to safety in Croatia.

    Dr. Clyde D. Robbins, director of Design and Construction at Appalachian State University, thrives on pressure. It is a good thing, since he must deal with it every day he walks in the office.
“Whenever I am away from my job, I miss the pressure,” said Robbins. “I love my work—it is my life.”
   Robbins was not exactly a top-notch student during his childhood in upstate New York and had no career goals to speak of throughout his years in high school. Due to the lack of laws governing when a child could start school, however, Robbins managed to graduate high school when he was only 15.

   The Department of Housing and Residence Life is currently seeking to fill four available resident assistant (RA) positions.
The positions, available in Doughton, Gardner, Coltrane and Eggers residence halls, have been open since the beginning of the academic year.
   Rick L. Geis, director of Housing and Residence Life, said while the department has interviewed applicants, it is not going to hire in haste.

   Programs such as Emerging Leaders are specifically targeted toward first-semester freshmen in order to pose questions about strengths and limitations and how to become successful students.

The Hospitality House, located on King Street is one location for volunteering.
    The number of students involved in community service through the Appalachian State University Service Learning Programs doubled during the 2001-02 academic year to include more than 1,000 through 39 classes, said Shari L. Galiardi, coordinator of the programs.
   Service Learning is a division of Appalachian and the Community Together (A.C.T.).
