Most teams are not very hopeful when they play a team that is nationally ranked in the top 10.
The Appalachian State University women’s field hockey team held onto a little hope, however, as national powerhouse University of Louisville rolled into town Sunday.
The Mountaineers (2-5) held their own for most of the first frame of play, but the Cardinals (4-3) struck fast and hard toward the end of the half. With just inside 12 minutes remaining, a stealth run down the right side and assist by Olivia Netzler led to a Joanie Frame goal putting Louisville up 1-0.

A second goal followed a few minutes later, as Jen Kostelic walked through the Appalachian defense and put one past goalie Amy Sarno. Then with no time remaining, Frame struck again when the Cardinals earned a penalty corner, and raised the count to 3-0.
It would be all they needed, as the Cardinals out-shot the Mountaineers 15-4.
“We didn’t get that many chances, and I am sure that the stats will show that we didn’t get that many shots,” said senior captain Emily Walls. “It is hard to score when you have only taken a few shots in the whole game.”
Appalachian’s best opportunity came on a blast by Walls that forced Louisville goalie Christy Hershey to make an immaculate save.
Appalachian played the Cardinals to a scoreless second half but could not put the little orange ball in the back of the net.
With the offense not seeing much action, the defense was forced to step up against a strong Louisville attack that averages almost three goals a game.
“We played sound, solid defense,” said assistant coach Amanda Latz.
“I was really proud of both of our goalies and our defensive penalty corner unit. There are certainly a lot of positives to take from [the game].”
Sarno showcased her skills with six saves, keeping Appalachian in the game most of the way. Teammate Kate Ryno came on late to make two saves of her own.
Many players believe they played a mediocre game and Louisville is a team the Mountaineers can beat on any given day.
“I think that they just out-skilled us today,” said Walls. “They played better than us. We just didn’t have a good game.”
“I think that we did a good job—this team is ranked in the top five and we tied in the second half at zero. We definitely had our chances, we just didn’t capitalize,” said Latz.
The Mountaineers are back in action Wednesday vs. Catawba College at 8 p.m. in Kidd Brewer Stadium.
