Congressional approval for war arguably evident

To The Editor:
Mr. Nix, in his haste to assail President [George W.] Bush, makes one egregious error in his commentary (Sept. 10); an error, in my opinion, that invalidates his commentary and reduces it to nothing more than a whiny rant against the President and the US. Here is the quote directly from Mr. Nix’ commentary, “Congressional support is a good idea, seeing how the United States has not had it before going to war since World War II.” If Mr. Nix is willing to make such an outlandish and untrue statement and assert it as fact, how can anyone take the rest of his diatribe seriously? The President had Congressional support for the Vietnam War via the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. I know many people contend the President overstepped the intentions of that resolution with his actions in Vietnam, but there was Congressional support in the beginning nonetheless. There was Congressional support for the Gulf War of the early 90s and Congress has already drafted a resolution authorizing the President to take the necessary measures in response to the terrorist attacks of 9-11.
I understand that this was a forum for Mr. Nix to present his views, but his total disregard for fact strips his commentary of any credibility. Perhaps a bit more research would be useful next time. It might, at least, make his whining readable.

To The Editor:
James Nix is naive and misinterpreting the Israeli-Palestinian situation. First of all, the only atrocities are being carried out by the Palestinian terrorist groups (as stated by the State Department) and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). In Palestinian children’s textbooks, there is blatant anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism, calling for Jihad and the “liberation of ALL Palestine.” Israel is not 100% perfect but at least in the schools there is tolerance and understanding of other peoples and they do not call for “war with the Muslims.”
Mr. Nix talks about the desperation of the Palestinians who blow themselves up next to babies, grandmothers, and other CIVILIANS who are unarmed and utterly defenseless. Desperation is NOT a justification to commit “crimes against humanity.” There are plenty of people who are desperate. Do Kurds blow themselves up in crowded ice cream shops in Istanbul, Teheran, or Baghdad because a state is more important to them than life itself?
Do not excuse such institutionalized hatred of the Jewish people and the State of Israel because of what you see in the news.
