Senior captain Emily Walls scores one of her four individual goals for ASU in their first win this season against St. Francis.
Behind senior captain Emily Walls, the Appalachian State University field hockey team racked up its first win in convincing style over visiting St. Francis.
Walls netted four goals while the entire St. Francis team only shot the ball four times in the Mountaineers’ 6-1 win.
“Our coaches told us to go out and have fun today,” said Walls. “[Four goals] is my idea of fun right there.”
The game was Appalachian’s to win from the very beginning. In the first two minutes Nara Brookes made a perfect pass to Walls and she knew exactly what to do with it, put it home.
“You should expect good things out of [Walls], she is a senior, she is experienced, she is skillful, she is fast and she wants it,” said coach Patience Harrison. “That girl is going to be a scoring machine this semester; she is ready to break some records.”
Brookes made another brilliant pass to Shannon Mayan a few minutes later and added a goal of her own before the final whistle blew in Kidd Brewer Stadium.
The win was just what the team needed, coming off two tough losses, one to a great James Madison team and the other to a skillful American squad.
“Our team needed a win to affirm for them all the hard work and time that they have put in so far,” said Harrison. “This is good for us and hopefully we can just get going from here.”
The Mountaineers showed signs of perfection and most importantly the team appeared to be in sync with each other.
“We worked together, and used a lot more passing,” said Walls. “We supported each other and communication was high; everything that we worked on in practice just clicked today.”
Now with a win under their belts, the ASU women’s field hockey team has a new confidence and is ready to start a winning streak and begin a journey to win in their conference, according to players.
“Our season goal is to win the East Division of the NorPac [Northern Pacific Conference] and assure the victory over Southwest Missouri,” said Harrison.
Saturday the lady Mountaineers lost a tough battle to visiting American University as the Mountaineers could not get a ball past goalie Laura Miller.
Appalachian will return to action on Friday, Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. as they host Miami University.
