Digging, setting and killing their way past North Carolina State University Tuesday night made the Appalachian State University women’s volleyball team 5-0 at the start of a season for the first time since 1986.

Heisman Trophy candidate Byron Leftwich stepped back with plenty of protection from his offensive line and lobbed a 22-yard pass to the back right-hand corner of the end zone.
The pass sailed over several Appalachian State University defenders and fell softly into the hands of wide receiver Curtis Jones for a Marshall University touchdown.
This perfectly executed play was one of many that led to the Thundering Herd’s 50-17 win over the Mountaineers last Saturday at Marshall Stadium in Huntington, W.Va.

Freshman quarterback Richie Williams led the Mountaineers in Saturday’s game against Marshall. Williams stepped into the starting role after senior quarterback Joe Burchette underwent surgery Friday.
If you watched practice this week for the Appalachian State Mountaineers you would have seen some familiar things, like    the number 16 of Joe Burchette taking snaps and throwing passes.
However, there was an unfamiliar face also working with the first team. That was the face of red-shirt freshman quarterback Richie Williams.
Burchette has had a sore back recently, and it was discovered Thursday that the problem was actually a ruptured disc. He had surgery in Charlotte Friday while the team was traveling to Huntington, W.Va., to face Marshall University.
