Mountaineers face Thundering Herd, Heisman contender in season opener
    Appalachian State’s offense must beat Marshall at its own game in order to win

The Mountaineers will look to senior quarterback Joe Burchette for leadership on and off the field in their journey to take the SoCon title.
Running-Even
   The Mountaineers’ running game relies heavily on the legs of tailback Jerry Beard, who is entering his senior year as the feature running back after sharing the position the last two years.
Passing-Marshall
   Appalachian will rely on senior quarterback Joe Burchette for leadership on and off the field in their journey to take the Southern Conference title and make a run at the Division I-AA title.
Defense-ASU
   To win in Huntington, W. Va. the Mountaineers must stop Marshall’s offensive barrage led by possibly the nation’s premier pitch-and-catch combination, Byron Leftwich and Darius Watts.
Overall-ASU
   If the Mountaineers are going to leave Huntington with a victory, they are going to have to beat Marshall at their own game.

   At first glance, State Farm Fields are alive with activity. Soccer balls fly near the goal; some go in while others are saved by a diving goalie. There is a constant chatter of encouragement, congratulations and occasional criticism. Eventually screams of joy are heard, signifying the end of practice. The one thing not present is the head coach.
