Our Perspective ... Deferred rush: Positive step for freshmen

Incoming freshmen must wait at least one semester before being allowed to formally rush an Appalachian State University fraternity or sorority.
The Appalachian sees this action as a chance for freshmen to educate themselves about Greek life before making a commitment to join.
The deferred rush policy was implemented last December after a committee of students and faculty researched other universities who currently use the program.
Freshmen grade point averages and the waning number of students rushing were factors examined in this decision.

The summer is over and students have rolled back into Boone for what could turn out to be a promising year in the high country. All of us students have our views on how the year will turn out, some visions are good and some bad. But one thing is true, we have all made the trek up the mountain for the same thing…experiences.
The seniors are walking into their final year and looking toward what the future holds while still trying to hold onto what they have come to love over the last three, maybe four years. Commencement will be in December, or for some in May, and there is nothing but the real world to look forward to after that. This final year is the last time you will see some of your friends and the last time you get to enjoy places like Klondike, Macado’s or Murphy’s.
Major league baseball: What’s the big deal?

Major League Baseball has done it again. While a great season is occurring on the field, the owners and player’s union leaders manage to get everyone’s attention on a pending labor strike.
The labor strike, scheduled for Aug. 30, is over one key issue: “Who has bigger testicles?” The union and the owners want you to believe it is over the salaries of the players, steroid testing or even a worldwide player draft. This is nothing more than an overblown pissing match, with each side trying to prove they own the biggest bat.
The average salary for major leaguers this year was at 2.38 million. 2.38 million? I believe I could live quite nicely for thirty or forty years on that kind of salary. They only go to work 162 times a year, they have off from the middle of October to the end of February, and they play a child’s game for that outrageous salary.
