On their major-label release “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Silence,” GlassJaw hit a nerve in the hardcore community. Singer Daryl Palumbo dredged up the most personal experiences, from his battle with Chrohn’s Disease to his tumultuous relationship with a girl who goes unnamed yet obviously provides the fodder for that album.
Many critics claimed GlassJaw’s lyrics were misogynistic and juvenile, grouping them into the “Adidas Rock” category shared by bands such as Korn and the Deftones.
Returning for their sophomore release “Worship and Tribute,” critics will be surprised to find what they had dubbed as a novelty act is knocking down their doors with some or the best songs of the summer.
“Worship and Tribute” combines incredibly layered songs with a vocal intensity rarely seen in hardcore. Palumbo’s voice is honest, vulnerable, yet can lash out unsuspectingly. On emotional tracks such as “Ape Dos Mil” and “Two Tabs of Mescaline,” his voice soars to new heights, while showing how much the band’s music has matured.
With only two albums under their belt, each one groundbreaking in its own right, GlassJaw is a group whose evolution will undoubtedly be worth watching.
