Finally, theres
an emcee who not only breaks out of the racial barrier of hip hop
but also rhymes about more emotional subjects than the value of
their wristwatch or the rims on their car.
Eminem? Hardly.
His name is Slug, born Sean Daley, a Midwestern
white male who is the lyrical mastermind behind Atmosphere.
Throughout all of God Loves Ugly,
Slug paints a portrait of himself as a self-deprecating anti-hero,
sifting through his girl troubles and spitting out some of the most
personal lyrics seen in hip hop lately.
With formidable venom-tinged rhymes laid over
old-school minimalist beats, provided courtesy of producer Ant,
it reminds the listener of the intensity quality hip hop brings
to an album when done right.
For all of their bravado, Dr. Dre and Eminem can
never hope to re-create the realness that Atmosphere brings to every
album, and God Loves Ugly is no exception. |
