UNC President Molly C. Broad spoke to the search committee July 24.
The search for Appalachian State University’s sixth chancellor began last week with the first meeting of the chancellor search committee.
“We have a big task ahead of us,” vice-chair Glenn W. Wilcox told the committee. “This can make all the difference at Appalachian State University for the next 15, 20, 30 years, or maybe more.”
Out of the past chancellors, the least any one has stayed has been 10 years.
“We’re looking for someone who can lead us for the next 10 years and beyond,” committee chair Robert G. Fox said.
University of North Carolina system president Molly C. Broad charged the committee of the task before it and spoke on the key elements in a successful search.
She told the16-member committee comprised of trustees, faculty, students, staff, alumni and community representatives the selection of a leader will define the university in the future.
“Searches for university chancellors and presidents have become very difficult in the last decade,” she said.”
Construction on King Street causes delays by Leslie Rasimas

The need for resurfacing King Street is more important than the inconvenience it poses, local residents and businesses said.
“The existing pavement of King Street has aged out and we are working to resurface as quick as possible,” said Mike Pettyjohn, division maintenance engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. “It’s a night job so it shouldn’t pose too many problems.”

University Police increased traffic citations at the beginning of May in an effort to curb speeding and protect pedestrians along Rivers Street.
Concern for the safety of pedestrian students trying to cross Rivers Street caused an increase in traffic enforcement.
The traffic enforcement on Rivers Street was increased on or about May 1. This was done after the removal of the crosswalk traffic light at the intersection of Center Street and Rivers Street.
The crosswalk was removed by the NC Department of Transportation because the pole had rusted and was considered a safety hazard, said University Police Chief Gunther Doerr.
Between January and May, 84 traffic citations were issued on campus. Since the increased enforcement began, 103 traffic citations have been issued.
