Dr. Marek Szopski is currently teaching an international communications class during summer school at Appalachian State University. He is functional in five languages and considers himself to be a “philologist.”
In this vast, expanding world, it is important for Appalachian State University to gain knowledge of cultures and people that are not so familiar.
Dr. Marek Szopski, a visiting professor of communications, has brought that knowledge to Boone from Warsaw, Poland.
Szopski is a patient, intelligent and very busy man who is currently teaching intercultural communication for the second summer school session.
In 1999, he first came to the university for one year to teach classes in the department of communication and popular culture in the department of sociology.
In Warsaw, Szopski teaches at three schools: Warsaw University, the Warsaw School of Social Psychology and the Communication and Media College.
Before he became a teacher himself, Szopski followed the road of education from Warsaw University, earning a master’s degree in English literature and beginning his Ph.D in sociology, to the University of Notre Dame where he earned his Ph.D in sociology and graduated in 1993.
