Student theft creates headaches for women

COMMENTARY

There has been a desperate perpetrator of the tampon machines in all of the women’s restrooms in Plemmons Student Union.
A “Due to continued theft we are no longer able to provide this service. We apologize for the inconvenience,” sign has been posted on each silver dispenser of tampons and sanitary napkins.
The machines were broken into and could not be continually repaired.
Scott Cato, day manager of the student union, said an unknown person damaged the dispensers trying to obtain approximately one dollar in quarters from each machine. Apparently, this person was not interested in the contents, just the junk change, enough to buy a soda or two from another machine.
This person picked one of the busiest buildings on campus and was never caught.
Why did they choose the student union? Perhaps the rush one gets from the fear of being caught was enough of a reason to commit the senseless act.
Who is so desperate? Who is willing to risk their chance at education for a handful of quarters? Who is the person that has ruined this service for the girls that find themselves in an emergency between classes?
It is hard work to break into any locked machine. After the first theft, one would think the thief would quit when the reward was so little. However, our criminal broke into approximately eight or nine machines.
At $2, at the most, per machine, this is a grand total of $18! Seems to me like it would really be worth the time and effort.
For all those females caught unprepared, Cato said the student union hopes to have the machines stocked and secured by fall semester. I am not sure what additional measures can be made to lock down these machines any more than they already are. One needs a crow bar just to get the tampon out once it is paid for.
This is one more issue the university should not have to waste time correcting. The custodians should not spend time repairing dispensers, the school should not be spending the money to repair the dispensers and I should not be venting my anger about another injustice.
I am a strong believer in what goes around, comes around.
If this was a male perpetrator, I would like to know how he sneaked in and out of the bathrooms without being caught, and one day he will be caught for another petty crime.
If this was the work of a female, someday I hope to see her walking on campus with a big stain on the back of her pants.
I think that would be true justice.
For those that choose stupidity, you will look stupid whether or not you are caught.
However, the students that respect their fellow peers are rewarded with relationships, health and prosperity.
It is not my job to lecture the student body and baby-sit the immature ones. Take responsibility for yourself and your friends.
If you happen to know who needed the extra change, please tell him or her to respect their school, not engage in pathetic acts of desperation and how it is not funny or cool to leave the ladies without supplies.
That is all I have to say about that.
    Period.
