The Appalachian | Opinion

Our Perspective... Experience teaches new college students
The past few weeks have seen a lot of new faces on the Appalachian State University campus.
From campers leisurely enjoying their summer vacations to the out-of-towners here for An Appalachian Summer Festival, the campus has been busy.
Perhaps the largest group of new faces is the incoming freshman class participating in Phase One Orientation.
For the most part, the newest additions to the Appalachian family are recent high school graduates eager to get out on their own for the first time.
They come to the two-day sessions ready to make new friends and escape the shadows of their parents for a few hours.
During Orientation, they are escorted around campus by fellow students, attend informational meetings and get their class schedule for the fall semester.
Through all the excitement, the Orientation staff shares the basics of living on campus, going to class and the college lifestyle in general.
The Appalachian recently talked to some of the incoming freshmen to see how Orientation was going.
Student theft creates headaches for women

COMMENTARY

There has been a desperate perpetrator of the tampon machines in all of the women’s restrooms in Plemmons Student Union.
A “Due to continued theft we are no longer able to provide this service. We apologize for the inconvenience,” sign has been posted on each silver dispenser of tampons and sanitary napkins.
The machines were broken into and could not be continually repaired.
Scott Cato, day manager of the student union, said an unknown person damaged the dispensers trying to obtain approximately one dollar in quarters from each machine. Apparently, this person was not interested in the contents, just the junk change, enough to buy a soda or two from another machine.
Summer campus resources dwindle at night

COMMENTARY

Anxiety, stress and uncertainty usually accompany new experiences for many people.
This summer I made the decision to go to the second session of summer school here at Appalachian State University. Summer school was something that I had not previously done and I did not quite know what I should expect.
Well, the time eventually came for summer school classes to start. The two courses that I signed up to take did not seem like they would be as difficult as I had expected and my new roommate and I were getting along great.
