Every year the athletic programs at Appalachian State University manage to perform beyond our expectations and amaze us.
The Mountaineer football, wrestling and track teams have made a habit out of winning yet manage somehow to impress even the most cynical sports critic.
From last-minute shots to miracle plays, Appalachian athletics will find a way to win.
Other varsity sports never cease to amaze either. Appalachian basketball returned to its former glory this season, volleyball got off to its best start ever and club hockey had its own miracle on ice.
To honor the athletes of Appalachian State and the sacrifices they make in the name of sport, we have put together a list of the top 10 moments for Mountaineer athletics this year.

Georgia Southern University could only manage seven runs during their three-game home series against Appalachian, but it was enough to claim a sweep.
The Eagles used superb pitching performances by their starters to overwhelm ASU, holding the team to only three runs in three games.
In the opener Friday night, Appalachian’s Mary Lutz scored in the first inning on a Georgia Southern error, giving Appalachian a 1-0 lead.
The run, however, would be the only one the Mountaineers scored all day.
Georgia Southern’s Lindsay Jones and Sam Steiner both had hits in the first inning, and both were then driven in by Janice Savage.

Game One
In the first of a three-game series, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro wasted little time in showing why they are one of the top teams in the conference.
In fact, they did not even waste an inning, scoring early and often and sending the Mountaineers to a 14-7 defeat.
